An envoy was sent among the nations, saying, 7. Let us make war against Edom! I can bring you down even from there! Since there is no direct indication of chronological setting clearly suggested by the book itself, and since the historical identity of the author is uncertain as well, a possible date for the book can be arrived at only on the basis of internal evidence. When did the hostile actions of Edom against Judah that are described in this book take place? Many nineteenth-century scholars linked the events of the book to a historical note found in 2 Kgs cf. But the evidence presented for this view is not entirely convincing, and most contemporary Old Testament scholars reject a ninth-century scenario. Apparently, he was unable to afford any words describing himself or his family in any way. Therefore, while twelve other men named Obadiah appear in Scripture, Old Testament scholars cannot identify with certainty any of them as the author of this book. Dating the book of Obadiah accurately is nearly impossible due to the scant historical information contained in the book. While several options have been proposed by scholars, the best argument places Obadiah in the s BC, making him the earliest writing prophet, a few years prior to Joel, and a contemporary of Elisha.
The biggest piece of evidence for this early date comes from Obadiah —14, which indicates an Edomite invasion of Jerusalem. While Edom was too weak a nation to ever invade Judah on its own, Edom no doubt participated with other nations when the winds of change blew in its favor.
These twelve are minor only in length of prophetic material; the entire collection, originally on one scroll, is equivalent to just one of the books comprising the Major Prophets. They were assembled into a collection at some point after the rebuilding of the destroyed temple in Jerusalem. The earliest physical evidence is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls dating from the mid-second century BCE ; among the scrolls are fragments from all twelve Minor Prophets.
Several of the books predate the exile of the Israelites to Assyria and Babylonia.

From the earliest times, according to the text, the prophets were seen as interpreters of the written Torah , particularly the prophetess Huldah in 2 Kings 2 Kings Thus the Deuteronomic theology of reward and retribution based on the observance of the Covenant is emphasized at the same time as the importance of the text compiled by the Deuteronomic editors is emphasized as a source of knowledge of that Covenant. Understandably, the literature based on this powerful constellation of ideas became popular and influential in Hebrew culture.

As a result, scholars have taken a wide variety of positions on the book, and the debate has been vigorous. Obadiah was a very common name in the Old Testament, and scholars think that the Obadiah who wrote the book is not mentioned elsewhere. We know him only from his own book. He apparently was a prophet from the southern kingdom of Judah, for reasons we are just about to see. Edom was a kindred nation to Israel.

The same plan has been followed as in Part 1. A historical introduction is offered to each period. To each prophet are given, first a chapter of critical introduction, and then one or more chapters of exposition. A complete translation has been furnished, with critical and explanatory notes. All questions of date and of text, and nearly all of interpretation, have been confined to the introductions and the notes, so that those who consult the book only for expository purposes will find the exposition unencumbered by the discussion of technical points.
The necessity of including within one volume so many prophets, scattered over more than three centuries, and each of them requiring a separate introduction, has reduced the space available for the practical application of their teaching to modern life. But this is the less to be regretted, that the contents of the nine books before us are not so applicable to our own day as we have found their greater predecessors to be.
On the other hand, however, they form a more varied introduction to Old Testament Criticism, while, by the long range of time which they cover, and the many stages of religion to which they belong, they afford a wider view of the development of prophecy. Let us look for a little at these two points. That is to say, these nine books raise, besides the usual questions of genuineness and integrity, every other possible problem of Old Testament Criticism.
It has, therefore, been necessary to make the critical introductions full and detailed.
